Groups in Fredericton working to settle Ukrainian immigrants are asking for donations to help efforts both here and abroad.
Hundreds of Ukrainian immigrants have come to New Brunswick in recent months, starting with a Canadian government jet landing this spring in Moncton.
Cash, food, and supplies have been gathered in recent months to help with local settlement efforts by one group, Fredericton Helping Hands for Ukraine. Last month it closed its depot and relocated goods to a nearby thrift store.
Another group, the Ukrainian Community of Fredericton, has been circulating links on social
media asking people to donate to help people in the war-torn country.
They say that the best way to help people who are still struggling in Ukraine is by donating to well-respected humanitarian organizations. This can help to give better health care and food to people still struggling in Ukraine.
Another way to help is to reach out to the Ukrainian immigrants in Fredericton through groups organized on social media and watch for opportunities to go to rallies to attend fundraisers.
Russia first invaded Ukrainian territory in 2014 when it took over Crimea. Earlier this year, Russia invaded again with the largest number of Russian soldiers being deployed into Ukraine since the beginning of the war. They were seeking to capture the capital, Kiev, and other major cities and territories.
As the war draws on into a second calendar year, people across the world have seemingly become less concerned about the war than they were during the winter. This has led to not only fewer donations being made to help the Ukrainian people, but it has also led to a vast number of people believing the war to be over. While this is happening, more and more people are being affected and immigrating to countries such as Canada to seek safety.
Many of those who arrive here, in cities like Fredericton, have concerns about the safety of their friends and family members back in Ukraine. They have been the most vocal in local media articles detailing the needs of their home country, stating they are most in need of medical supplies and medicine.
The main message being communicated by these groups and others is that there are still things people back here in Canada can do by helping those who have immigrated and donating to humanitarian causes.
Sadly, it seems very unlikely the war between Ukraine and Russia will cease anytime in the near future and as a single person, it may seem like you cannot help, but there are plenty of ways to help the immigrating families and the people still in Ukraine by reaching out to your community and donating.
