If you haven’t already seen Mr. Math King on your for you page, then you’re missing out! We have a local celebrity right here in FHS.
By day, Mr. King is a math teacher right here in our school. But by night, he’s acquiring millions of views on his TikTok page. His most viral video contains him solving a simple math equation in the most confusing way possible. His top video has 14.5 million views, and 2.4 million likes. Followed by his second most popular video, which has 176.6 thousand views.
Mr. King began his teaching career as a French immersion teacher at Leo Hayes High School, “unfortunately” said Mr. King in a joking manner. During his time at Leo Hayes, he never ended up getting a permanent contract, and they “didn’t have a place for me anymore.” So, he transitioned to Fredericton High School, where he landed a permanent position and decided to pursue student council in an effort to be more involved in the school.
His most viral TikTok blew up overnight, matching his second most viral TikTok— with 176.6 thousand views— in just 2-3 hours. Overnight, he gained a couple of million views. His initial reaction was described as “wow, woah, that-that’s impressive.”
Many teenagers believe acquiring popularity on TikTok will radically change the course of their life. But according to our friend, Mr. Math King, it hasn’t drastically changed his life at all. “Sometimes I get recognized by students, but that’s about it.”
To our relief, Mr. King doesn’t see himself quitting his teaching job anytime soon to chase after a TikTok career. Especially because “TikTok has given [him] zero dollars so far.” Teaching played a big role in his famous TikTok. Mr. King is passionate about teaching and he says “My TikTok is tied into my day job.”
Upon further research, we discovered that many other teachers are also gaining fame over TikTok. We asked him why he thinks that is and he said, “As far as adults go, teachers can relate to students a little bit more.” As a teacher it is your job to spend time with teenagers and familiarize yourself with their culture, “so maybe that can help them with social media.”
In conclusion, go follow @mrmathking on TikTok and show your support!
