As the rest of Fredericton buckles down for winter, scare enthusiasts from around the city are congregating in the name of horror at the 2022 Freddy Fright Fest. This Halloween special, brought to life by the Charlotte Street Art Center, the Fredericton Hospice, and the Paramedics Association of NB, is the second ever Fredericton scare festival, and will likely be substantially spookier than its previous version. 2022’s haunted house will be held in the Capital Exhibition Center on Smythe Street and will run from October 20th – 31st, at varying evening times. Organizers have been working tirelessly to transform the old exhibition grounds into the spookiest, largest haunted house in Fredericton, and hope to see a good public turnout.
Instead of hosting several different festivals like years past, Fredericton has honed in on throwing one large Halloween celebration, combining all the usually separate spooky activities available around Fredericton into one big melting pot of scariness. The 2022 Fright Fest will include everything from a multi-themed haunted tour to a pumpkin carving contest with a $200 prize and will be suitable for all ages. To make sure all demographics of scare fans are satisfied, the haunted house will be divided into two main sections, deemed “Very Scary”, and “Not So Scary”.
Outside of the haunted house section of the festival, the Fright Fest will also bring in The Running Dead, a Fredericton-based running challenge centred on zombie creepiness. Partakers will run one mile through heavily-populated zombie nesting grounds, dodging and swerving attacks from a posse of undead freaks. This, of course, is not for the faint of heart and will be offered externally to the main Haunted House.
The 2022 Fright Fest will also offer events such as a horror trivia night, a Halloween-themed rave party with a costume judging contest, and a meeting with the maritime sect of the Ghostbusters, who will be available to solve all your ghost-hunting, ghost-eradicating, or ghost-befriending needs.
Due to COVID-19, Fredericton’s recent haunted houses have been few and far between. Because of that, organizers wanted to make this year’s celebration of all things horror their best festival yet, and therefore put an exceptional amount of work into the event. Make-up, set design, and scare-quality are only a few things that have been greatly improved, making the spooky experience oh-so-much better. Haunted house visitors of Fredericton are kindly requested to make sure their socks are properly secured and protected from the most shocking of scares, as well as to be prepared for all the terrifying tidbits Fredericton has to offer.
