Recently Elon Musk fired many Twitter employees, including executive members of the team. This is just one of the many changes that have been implemented with his new ownership of the site. All his changes have caused major controversy and have led to people in disarray wondering what is next to come for the major social media site and the people that work for it.
Earlier this year in April of 2022, Elon Musk bought twitter for 44 billion dollars. Though it took a few months for this change to come into effect, as of October 27th, he now has full ownership of Twitter. Many people believe this to be a problem for not only the social media site, but for stockholders of twitter— and even Elon Musk himself—with plenty of experts saying, “He has no clue what he is doing.”
The true reason for why Elon Musk bought Twitter is a question many people are asking. Musk said himself that he wishes twitter to be, “a platform of free speech” where people can express opinions freely. But many people are speculating that may not be his real reason for buying Twitter and that his main goal is to help market his other companies. With the power to control Twitters algorithms it can help Musk better market his other companies like Tesla using ads and shining a bigger light on posts about said companies. While nobody is positive these are the true reasons why Musk bought the platform, Musk is certainely smart enough to realize that Twitter is a great way to put more focus on him and his work.
Along with his plans to “better free speech” with the use of twitter, Musk also has many other plans and changes to implement. He wants to relax content moderation rules and he plans to make Twitter a private company. Which will lead to Twitter being delisted from the New York Stock Exchange. From the looks of things this only seems like the beginning for Musk and Twitter.
All his plans and changes have been met with a lot of controversy, since many of these changes would have an enormous influence on the site. Firstly, with more relaxed content moderation it is far more likely to insight hate speech and more violent posts than before. Plus, Twitter being a private company leads to many stockholders losing their share of Twitter which many of them are rightfully upset about.
Many of Musks' plans for Twitter have led to large backlash amongst the Twitter users and investors. It appears Twitter is on a downward spiral and will cause many problems for its users, its investors, and its employees. Many experts are even saying that if Musk does not change his vision for Twitter, he could end up being in major debt because Musk’s deal to buy Twitter involved taking out $12.5 billion in loans and it will take quite a lot of money to repay that debt. This is just one of the many issues that have been produced by Musks’ new ownership of the site.
Could this be the beginning of the end for Twitter? Only time will tell.
