A chorus of bells and whistles filled the Tom Morrison Theatre this past week as the Fredericton High School music department performed their first public concert since the beginning of COVID-19. Parents, siblings, friends and even strangers occupied rows upon rows of cushioned seats in the auditorium, taking in a long-awaited moment for music lovers of Fredericton. The concert band, jazz band, and string orchestra each played a plethora of pieces dedicated to celebrating their shared love of music.
COVID-19 had a major impact on many extracurricular groups. However, it especially limited the music department. Although sports teams were able to continue playing with mask regulations, it would be pretty difficult to play the trumpet with something covering your mouth. We ventured backstage to investigate — here’s what some band members had to say about it.
A student clarinetist, Claire Chaplin, shared how she missed out on a lot of playing time and experience. “When we went into lockdown and couldn’t play with anyone, I didn’t really have any motivation to practice. I lost over a year of time that I could have been playing and improving on my instrument,” she explained.
While many adult players were pumped to continue practicing from home, school music departments were often the only motivational factors for many students.
On top of this, band is not only a place to harness musical talent, but a safe haven for many teenagers. Although so-called “band kids” sometimes get a bad reputation, they are incredible at one thing in particular: inclusivity. The music department is a welcoming environment for all students, no matter how unique, and it’s a place where lots of connections and friendships are born that otherwise may never have been possible.
Having missed out on these social opportunities the past few years has been difficult for more creative students, so the return of the program is an inspiring sensation. A senior in band, Grace McAllister, discussed the nostalgia of finally returning to the program after two years left on pause. “I feel like it will be nice to be in that environment yet again,” she stated backstage before performing.
Musicians and music lovers alike are enthralled by the return of musical performances at Fredericton High School. We are so grateful to finally come together safely once more, and best said by Grace McAllister: “Screw COVID!”
