It was a big day for the FHS Senior Girls Cross Country Team two weeks ago, with them winning the NBIAA 2022-2023 provincial championship banner.
The championship took place at Bathurst High School on Friday, October 21st, where teams of high schools from all over New Brunswick came down to race over the field and forests of Bathurst. All teams put in a lot of hard work into practice, matches, and tournaments in preparation for this Championship.
Last week they put their dedication and hard work to the test in an attempt of become the provincial champions.
All teams did well, but in the end, FHS came out on top; winning first place with an excellent score of 14 points, especially when considering that the team in second placed with 71. This earned them a banner for the school and gold medals to wear with pride.
Samantha Norris finished in 1st place, Nicole Trites finished directly behind her in 2rd, Mattea McNair in 5th, Gabby Kozak followed in 6th, and Eva Kozak came 10th.
This win is nothing new to the FHS Senior Girls, as for all local races against LHHS, OHS, and ESA, they led the pack with nearly the whole team finishing in the top ten at each event. This season, the girls finished first at regionals with a total of 13 points (Samantha Norris finished in 1st place, Nicole Trites in 3rd, Eva Kozak in fourth, with Mattea McNair then Gabby Kozak right behind her in 5th and 6th.)
“It’s bittersweet. Winning the banner with these girls was the perfect way to end the season but I’m also really sad that it’s done. I’ve grown close with all of the senior girls over the years because of cross country, and have enjoyed running with them. It’s been a lot of fun seeing our growth as a team all throughout high school. I’m really happy we were able to keep the title of provincial champions for our category.” Said Mattea McNair.
Last year the FHS Senior Girls also took home the 2021-2022 provincial banner. The 2020-2021 season had no provincials due to covid, but the year before that FHS won the 2019-2020 junior girls provincial banner which included many of this year’s senior girls.
“I plan to continue running in university, and I’ve applied to a few places such as the University of Victoria and Queens University.” Said Nicole Trites.
“I’ve thought about trying out for XC in university but I’m not sure yet. If I don’t run with a varsity team, I would still like to maybe run with a club team for university that isn’t as competitive, but still keeps me in shape and is fun.” Said Mattea McNair.
Now, they’ve finished their last season after being together for 4 years; continuing to improve and dominate in their field, even after leaving FHS.
